The Soviet Story on the Communist dictatorship to 1941, is a case in point. Note as well controversial claims on cross links to Nazism, including on the marxist influences in forming Nazism. The common theme is totalitarianism rooted in ruthless nihilist factions that seize power in the name of a victim group and promise the power to restore fortunes and right all wrongs. As Lord Acton famously observed, power (predictably) then corrupts, and total power corrupts totally.
Please view not so much as about Commies and Nazis -- don't make the error (never mind biases etc of the authors) of thinking this was unique to these ideologies (it is rooted in demonic depravity that seizes absolute power). Instead view this as being about what has already happened when ruthless factions seize power and resort to mass murder as a means to re-engineering society in the name of some new order.
Remember, too, this happened within living memory. And, that ever so many were intimidated into silence, or swallowed lies and the pretence that one cannot make a delicious omelet without cracking some eggs, and became collaborators and enablers by silence or failing to stand up for truth when it was hard and politically incorrect.
One lesson is that we must insist on justice, civility and restraint in small things, lest things spin out of control and we become enmeshed in large scale demonic evil in control of the instruments of power in institutions and the state.
What evils can happen if men turn their backs on God, or misuse the name of God on the premise of wickedness: let us do evil that good may come.
Down that road lies only demonic nihilism and it ends in darkness and horror.

Grim, but important viewing. END
PS: What does this all suggest about the quality of news, views, education, textbooks, museum displays, big-S "Science tells us" and so forth since the 1920's and currently, where power interests are involved? What should we be doing in response? How? (And, onward, how should we go about rebuilding a sound worldview?)
